But what have you got to do to look after a Bonsai in the proper way? Are a specific knowledge and special disposition necessary?

In order to learn about the growing techniques you can always attend courses at specific schools, though the common trait involves growing the plants with

patience and care, devoting them some time daily. If you mean to grow them just to create aesthetically perfect beings, the bonsais simply turn into any other habit and you lose their most

important worth: the chance of improving yourself through the tree’s progress.

In order to become a clever bonsaist it is absolutely necessary to learn to understand the tree’s needs and to accomplish this you must love it!

A naturally growing tree is self-sufficient whereas in the pot it needs a lot of care.
By being on the tree’s same wavelength it isn’t difficult to interpret its signals and guarantee its wellbeing.

It’s important to imagine and reproduce in the most faithful way possible the environment in which the tree lives taking special care of the light, temperature, dampness, wind, etc.

A tree must be watered in the right way and when it’s necessary. To try to establish some rules without having a clear idea either of the place where it should grow or the sizes of the bonsai and the pot is impossible and would surely

cause the bonsai lover to carry them out without truly understanding each tree’s real needs

When a plant is potted it’s earth hasn’t got many useful substances for it, therefore it’s necessary to feed it with all it needs for a perfect growth.

There are many fertilizers of different types on the market (liquid, powder, etc) and for a simple growing each can be used without problems once a month, respecting the dosages. The right time for fertilizing is during the vegetative growth which is different from plant to plant but which is more or less for all of them from March to October.

It’s very important to trim a Bonsai in order to make it look like a naturally growing tree. The trimming of the leaves takes place when the Bonsai is growing, when the branches usually start to grow making the Bonsai lose its shape. It therefore becomes necessary to intervene periodically to shorten the new buds keeping the tree to its original shape.

The root trimming is a delicate moment for the plant. Usually every two to three years the roots should be cut about 10-15%, creating the necessary space in the pot for the growth of new roots. During this phase it’s possible to change the earth. It’s advisable to accomplish

this just before the vegetative growth starts again (February, March) so the tree can grow the roots that were trimmed as soon as possible.
